The buildings sector plays a key role in climate protection, as it is a major contributor to global CO emissions. To date, regulatory requirements and assessment methods have focused predominantly on energy demand by building services, e.g. the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the German Building Energy Act (GEG). Little attention is paid to the fact that cement‐bound building materials, including in particular calcium silicate masonry, can absorb CO from the ambient air and bind it within their structure over their life cycle. The aim of this work is to systematically quantify the CO absorption potential of existing buildings and to critically assess the validity of established assessment methods. The focus is on two methodological approaches: a BIM‐based component‐specific identification of carbon sinks, and a simplified estimation using the tool developed in the context of DIN SPEC 91506. The study is based on four buildings of different construction years and uses. The study thus contributes to the assessment of CO sinks in the building stock and establishes a robust basis for planning and climate protection strategies. Furthermore, the specific CO storage potential of calcium silicate masonry structures is identified.
