Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) masonry is widely used in the UK and is a commonly utilised material, predominantly for housing, but also for other building structures. First produced in the 1950s in the UK, it has become an important masonry solution for houses used in number locations from cavity walls to below ground and in concrete beam and block floors. This paper looks at why the material has become so popular and the background for the acceptance of use. The growth of the market for AAC has been driven by changes to Building Regulations and solutions have been developed to improve the structures thermal and acoustic performance.
