The second tube of the Gotthard Road Tunnel – an engineering structure of extraordinary scale for the future

Der Gotthard‐Straßentunnel mit einer Länge von rund 17 km zählt zu den längsten Straßentunneln der Welt und wurde 1980 in Betrieb genommen. Nach fast 50 Jahren intensiver Nutzung ist aus sicherheits‐ und bautechnischen Gründen eine umfassende Sanierung notwendig. Zur Erhöhung der Sicherheit und zur Aufrechterhaltung des Verkehrs während der Sanierungsarbeiten wird parallel zum bestehenden Tunnel eine zweite Röhre erstellt. Der Artikel stellt das Projekt 2. Röhre des Gotthard‐Straßentunnels in seiner Gesamtheit vor und fokussiert auf ausgewählte, zentrale Herausforderungen während der Bauausführung: Dazu zählen die anspruchsvollen konventionellen Vortriebe in den Portalbereichen, die langen maschinellen Vortriebe durch wechselhaftes Gebirge sowie die Durchörterung der beiden rund 300 m langen kakiritischen Störzonen Nord und Süd, welche durch stark druckhaftes Gebirge gekennzeichnet sind.

The Gotthard Road Tunnel, which is around 17 km long, is one of the longest road tunnels in the world and was opened in 1980. After almost 50 years of intensive use, a comprehensive refurbishment is necessary for safety and structural reasons. To enhance safety and maintain traffic flow during the refurbishment work, a second tube is being constructed parallel to the existing tunnel. This article describes the project of the second tube of the Gotthard Road Tunnel and focuses on selected key challenges during construction. These include the demanding conventional tunnelling in the portal areas, the long mechanised tunnelling through variable rock formations, and the excavation of the two 300‐metre‐long Kakiritic fault zones North and South, which are characterised by highly compressive rock.
