The Chenab Bridge is an outstanding example of steel arch bridge construction under extreme topographical, climatic and logistical conditions. With an arch span of 467 m, it carries the new Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link 362 m above the Chenab River, making it world's tallest railway bridge. This article describes the Chenab Bridge as a completed structure from the perspective of structural design and construction. The focus is on the choice of system derived from the boundary conditions, the structural calculation models and the detailing of the arch, piers and superstructure. Particular emphasis is placed on the project‐specific solutions for logistics, fabrication and assembly, including cantilever construction of the arch, temporary stay system and incremental launching of the superstructure. The completion of the bridge is the result of a close integration of design and execution. The experience gained in the process will make a lasting contribution to the development of bridge construction in regions with challenging infrastructure.
