Der Dortmund-Ems-Kanal (DEK) als eine der wichtigsten künstlichen Wasserstraßenverbindungen Deutschlands wird - wie alle übrigen Wasserstraßen des westdeutschen Kanalnetzes - seit den 1980er-Jahren für die Begegnungen von Großmotorgüterschiffen und Schubverband ausgebaut. Im Zuge des Ausbaus müssen sämtliche kreuzenden Bauwerke wie Tunnel, Durchlässe oder Brücken an die neuen Abmessungen des Kanals angepasst werden. In vielen Losabschnitten ist das Kanalbett des DEK im Bereich der Südstrecke zwischen Dortmund und Bergeshövede bereits verbreitert und vertieft, Brücken und Düker sind dem Ausbauziel angepasst worden.
Das Wasserstraßen-Neubauamt Datteln (WNA) wird die in den 1930er-Jahren errichtete Kanalbrücke (KBr) Ems bei DEK-km 78,806N im Rahmen dieses Ausbauziels erneuern. Für den Neubau ist die Erstellung eines Doppeltrogs unter laufender Schifffahrt geplant. Der erste Trog sollte ursprünglich direkt neben der bestehenden KBr gebaut werden. Aufgrund des schlechten baulichen Zustands der KBr Ems wurde nach einer Variantenuntersuchung eine Umfahrungsstrecke als wirtschaftlichste, bautechnisch sinnvollste Lösung festgelegt. Derzeit befindet sich diese Umfahrungsstrecke in der Ausführungsphase; im Herbst 2019 wurde der Stahltrog der Umfahrungsstrecke horizontal über die Ems verschoben.

Since the 1980s the Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK), one of the most important German inland waterways, has been extended - as all other inland waterways of the Western German network of canals - so that large inland cargo vessels and convoys are able to pass. In the course of this expansion the structures crossing the canal like tunnels, culverts or bridges have to be adapted to the canal's new dimensions. In the area of the southern stretch between Dortmund and Bergeshövede several sections of the canal have already been widened and deepened; bridges and culverts have been adapted.
The Waterway Engineeering and Construction Office in Datteln will renew the Canal Aqueduct Ems at DEK-km 78, 806N, which was built in the 1930s, within the scope of this mentioned expansion target. The replacement is planned as a so-called double-trough during ongoing shipping. Originally, the first trough was meant to be built directly next to the existing canal aqueduct. An analysis of variants lead to a bypass canal as the most economical and most structurally reasonable solution due to the poor condition of the Canal Aqueduct Ems. Currently the bypass canal is being realised and in autumn 2019, the corresponding steel trough was horizontally pushed across the Ems.
