The Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) method is an efficient approach to imposing radiation conditions at the bounded region of interest in case of wave propagation in unbounded domains. This paper presents and validates 3D FE/PML numerical schemes based on two different PML formulations for homogeneous and inhomogeneous geological media exhibiting discrete or continuous inhomogeneity. In the equation of motion for the PML domain the applied stretching behavior is expressed either as complex material properties or as complex coordinates. Both PML formulations are implemented in the FEM and verified against analytical solutions. Three different types of material inhomogeneity are considered: layered half-space, continuously inhomogeneous half-space with linear velocity profile and continuously inhomogeneous half-space with nonlinear velocity profile. Sensitivity analyses are conducted, and the performance of the developed numerical schemes is investigated taking into account a broad variation of the PML parameters. Recommendations are given for the optimal values of the PML parameters for the case of homogeneous and inhomogeneous geological media.

Wellenausbreitung in inhomogene Medien mit der FE/PML-Methode
Die PML-(Perfectly-Matched-Layer-) Methode ist ein effizienter Modellierungsansatz zur Modellierung unendlich ausgedehnter Gebiete. Die PML werden als spezielle Elemente auf den Randknoten des FEM-Netzes eingefügt. Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der Verifizierung und Anwendung von 3D FE/PML Modellierung von kontinuierlich oder diskret inhomogenen geologischen Medien anhand von zwei unterschiedlichen Formulierungen der PML für zeitharmonische elastodynamische Wellenausbreitungsprobleme. Die Bewegungsgleichung der PML kann entweder als die eines nicht isotropen viskoelastischen Materials in natürlichen Koordinaten oder als die eines elastischen Materials in komplexwertigen gestreckten Koordinaten interpretiert werden. Beide Formulierungen werden in FEM implementiert und anhand analytischer Lösungen verifiziert. Die Materialinhomogenität des Bodens wird wie folgt berücksichtigt: geschichteter Halbraum, kontinuierlich inhomogener Halbraum mit linear zunehmender Scherwellengeschwindigkeit und kontinuierlich inhomogener Halbraum mit nichtlinear zunehmender Scherwellengeschwindigkeit. Sensitivitätsanalysen unter Berücksichtigung breiter Variation der PML-Parameter werden durchgeführt, um die optimalen PML Parameter zu ermitteln.
