Mit einer Länge von ca. 17 km ist der Gotthardt Straßentunnel einer der längsten Straßentunnel der Welt. Er wurde 1980 eröffnet und muss nun nach fast 50 Jahren intensiver Nutzung, umfassend saniert werden. Aufgrund der Bedeutung dieser Verbindung wurde beschlossen, parallel zur bestehenden Röhre eine zweite Röhre zu bauen. The Gotthard Road Tunnel, which is around 17 km long, is one of the longest road tunnels in the world and was opened in 1980. Now, after almost 50 years of intensive use, a comprehensive refurbishment is necessary. Due to the importance of the connection it was decided to built a second tube parallel to the existing one. The picture shows tunnelling works facing a disturbed zone which needs to take into account variable ground conditions and radial deformations. More on the project pp. 463.
