Tunnel excavation material as resource for underground power plants and concrete dam constructions / Tunnelausbruch als Rohstoff für den unterirdischen Kraftwerks- sowie Staumauerbau im Hochgebirge

‘Linthal 2015’ in the canton Glarus is currently one of the largest construction projects being undertaken by the Swiss energy sector. The core of the project is an underground pumped-storage power plant that is under construction. This will pump water from Lake Limmern at 1,800 m ASL to the higher Lake Mutt at 2,500 m ASL from where, utilising a maximum head of 709 m, it will again be used for the generation of electricity as required. The new power plant will have a pump and turbine output of 1,000 MW; the construction period is scheduled to extend over six years.
Such a complex construction project at a high-altitude setting involving huge volume flows (i.e. around half a million cubic metres of solid excavated material) can only be completed successfully with the sparing use of resources. This involves, in particular, the on-site processing of excavated limestone into aggregates for concrete.
Amongst other equipment, two powerful gravel processing plants, one using wet processing (at 1,874 m ASL) and the other dry processing (at 2,436 m ASL) were erected on site; these plants process the excavated material as needed for on-site concrete production. This allowed a closed materials cycle to be established, in turn allowing the site to operate self-sufficiently.
The challenges associated with using excavated tunnel material as a resource are tremendous. However, assuming the project is completed in line with its goals, the advantages for all parties will be even greater and, not least, environmental considerations will have been taken into account. These opportunities were exploited and implemented consistently on the Linthal 2015 construction site.
Linthal 2015 im Kanton Glarus ist aktuell eines der größten Bauvorhaben der Energiewirtschaft der Schweiz. Das Herzstück ist ein im Bau befindliches unterirdisch angelegtes Pumpspeicherkraftwerk. Dieses wird Wasser aus dem Limmernsee auf 1.800 m ü. M. in den höher gelegenen Muttsee auf 2.500 m ü. M. pumpen und bei Bedarf wieder zur Stromproduktion nutzen, wobei eine maximale Fallhöhe von 709 m bewirtschaftet wird. Das neue Kraftwerk soll eine Pump- und eine Turbinenleistung von je 1.000 MW aufweisen, die geplante Bauzeit beträgt sechs Jahre.
Eine derart komplexe Bauaufgabe im Hochgebirge mit ihren enormen Volumenströmen (z.B. ca. 0,5 Mio. m3 Festausbruch) ist nur mit einem schonenden Ressourcenumgang erfolgreich zu realisieren. Dazu gehört insbesondere das Aufbereiten des ausgebrochenen Kalksteins vor Ort zu Gesteinskörnungen für Beton. Auf der Baustelle wurden zwei leistungsstarke Kiesaufbereitungsanlagen, eine mit Nass- (auf 1.874 m ü. M.) und die zweite mit Trockenaufbereitung (auf 2.436 m ü. M.) installiert, die das Ausbruchmaterial bedarfsgerecht für die eigene Betonproduktion verarbeiten. So konnte ein geschlossener Stoffkreislauf erzeugt werden, womit die Baustelle autark agieren kann. Die Herausforderungen bei der Verwendung des Tunnelausbruchs als Rohstoff sind enorm. Noch größer sind aber bei zielorientierter Umsetzung die Vorteile für alle Beteiligten, und nicht zuletzt werden umweltrelevante Aspekte berücksichtigt. Diese Chancen wurden auf der Baustelle Linthal 2015 genutzt und konsequent umgesetzt.
